Veterans Day Parade 11-11-11 @11

Veterans day began as “Armistice Day” right after WWI. It is celebrated on November 11 because that is the date in 1918 that the war OFFICIALLY ended. It became an official holiday in 1954 when it was signed into law by President Eisenhower.

Reno will celebrate the holiday with a parade honoring our local military veterans who have served and protected our country. The theme of the parade this year is “Women in the military”.

Please join me and hundreds of others at the parade on Friday, 11-11-11 @ 11am (time the war officially ended) on Court & Virginia Street (downtown Reno) to cheer and thank those who help keep us FREE.

Two New Movie Theatres Open in Truckee

Two new boutique style movie theaters have just opened in the Village at Northstar, offering resort guests and members of the community yet another opportunity to relax and rejuvenate with friends and family when they visit the resort. The Village Cinemas are operated by veteran theater owners Bloomhuff Theatres, Inc. and are the only movie theaters in the vicinity of Truckee, Calif.
Located on Copper Lane near the entrance to the Village at Northstar across from TC’s Pub, The Village Cinemas feature two screens, with one containing 96 elevated stadium seats, and the second containing 45 elevated stadium seats. Scheduled to be open seven days a week through the remainder of the winter season, The Village Cinemas will show Hollywood hits and offer a full service concession stand featuring popcorn, candy and beverages.

I’m sure you know the story – the village who pools their meager resources finds that each of their individual little bits of food actually goes a long way when combined with that of others. Truckee has its own version that can be found weekly at our local community center. Now in its third year, Stone Soup offers a chance for all of us to get out and enjoy the company of our friends and neighbors, and recreate that sense of community that can sometimes be lost during the harsh winters here. There is no shortage of groups who get together to make the soup from goods donated by local restaurants each week – nonprofits, businesses, community organizations – all are on the docket to cook this year. T Pots Pottery is going to offer premade soup bowls for you to decorate for a $10 fee. Keep your bowl and bring it each week, or donate it to Stone Soup and pay it forward for a long time to come!

So if you find yourself in town on a Sunday evening between now and the end of March, come join us anytime between 5and 7pm at the Community Arts Center, 10046 Church Street. There is always entertainment by area musicians and lots of friendly folks to share a table with. Donate some money to the cause if you can, but if not, just enjoy a bowl of hot soup and fresh bread while listening to the music and watching all the little kids dancing around. It’s a great way to enjoy the best of Truckee!

Wolf Pack Wins Texting Challenge – Food Bank Receives 20,000 Meals!

In the recent texting challenge between the Wolf Pack and Boston College fans, Kraft has just announced that the Wolf Pack Fans have successfully sent more texts than Boston College resulting in a 20,000-meal donation from Kraft to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. The Wolf Pack will also receive an additional meal for each text sent. Wolf Pack fans came out in support of this challenge with so much excitement and commitment for which the Food Bank is so grateful for the participation.

Kraft created the text challenge for fans of each team to help make a difference with hunger issues in their region. Wolf Pack fans texted the word Nevada followed by a space and then their zip code to 71717 to show their support. Boston College fans are encouraged to text a similar message.

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl is the only bowl game raising money and awareness regarding the hunger problem in the United States. The bowl will celebrate the culmination of Kraft Foods’ HUDDLE TO FIGHT HUNGER program, which is the food company’s largest-ever branded initiative to fight hunger in America. The goal of the program is to donate as many as 20 million meals or more to Feeding America – the nation’s leading hunger relief organization – to help people in need.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is a regional food distribution and support system serving over 100 partner agencies in Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada provides and supports programs including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs and Kids Cafe (dinner program), Kids Cafe Summer Meals program, Food Stamp Outreach and much more. With the incredible snowfall in the Truckee and North Tahoe areas recently we all seem to remember to dress warmly for our outdoor activities. Our family recently experienced a reminder to be sure that we pay the proper respects to our house as well. We have a forced air heater in our garage; the garage door was left open overnight, exposing the heater to single digit temperatures; we awoke to an inoperable heater.

This has been a great learning experience; turns out that the water going through the condenser froze; any attempts at turning the heater on ran the risk of doing damage to the internal parts. Fortunately, after defrosting everything, having a repairman come to the rescue to double check the machinery, all is well, our house is comfortable and warm again. Moral of the story: enjoy the crystal blue skies, the sparkling snow and the incredible skiing of the Truckee and North Tahoe area but remember to take care of the house that keeps you comfy by protecting your home from freezing temperatures!

I don’t think there is anyone out there who would not agree that the real estate market in the Reno-Sparks area, and in many other areas around the country, has been hard hit over the past several years. We have all seen our property values decline pretty significantly. Many folks are struggling to find jobs. And many homeowners have been faced with tough decisions such as foreclosure and short sales.

Being a REALTOR has taken on a whole new meaning for me. I have gone from a salesperson who specialized the marketing of property for sale and helping buyers find their new home, to so much more than that. Helping homeowners avoid foreclosure by successfully finding alternatives such as short sale has made me so much more than a salesperson. I am a problem solver, listener, helper, and facilitator. I am genuinely helping people and making a real difference in their lives. For buyers I am assisting them in navigating the more complicated web of purchasing short sales and REOs. Helping them avoid the obstacles that arise in these types of purchases. It has become harder than ever to be a buyer with tighter lending standards, distressed properties and long wait times.

We look around in this industry and are often hard pressed to find positives and things to be thankful for. But, there is plenty that I am thankful for. The challenges of this market have made me a better REALTOR. I have been given the opportunity to not only help my neighbors buy and sell homes, but help them improve thier lives. By necessity I have been motivated to learn more, so I can help more.

Dickson Agents Participate in Girls on The Run 5K

Dickson agents Alison Elder and Aimee Schaller participated in the “Girls on the Run” 5K race at Truckee River View Sports Park Oct. 31. “Girls on the Run” is a non-profit prevention program for girls grades three through eight that helps to educate and prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Part of the program is training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running race. Both Elder and Schaller were paired up with “running buddies” from the “Girls on the Run” program for the race.

Spreading a Little Halloween Holiday Spirit

Dickson Realty Truckee–Tahoe infused the end of October with a little creativity and some team-building with a traditional pumpkin carving/decorating contest. The real estate company invited friends from Fidelity National, Placer and First American Title companies to judge the entries.

Agent Norm Nicholls Gets Into the Christmas Spirit

Dickson agent Norm Nicholls and a crew of Truckee Optimist Club members and friends gathered in November to cut local Red Fir Christmas trees for this year’s Truckee Optimist Club Christmas Tree lot. The lot opens on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Truckee Crossroads Shopping Center at the corner of Highway 89 and Deerfield Drive in Truckee and remains open until Dec. 23 or until supplies run out. All proceeds benefit scholarships, programs, grants, athletic events and organizations for Truckee youth. Reno: A Real Estate Market for the Outdoor Enthusiast.

Nevada has been making the headlines lately if you are reading the statistics on employment, housing market and general gloom about the poor economy in the state. Local state election races are pointing fingers on either side of the political spectrum to identify who’s responsible for the current state dilemma.

Enter Reno and Northern Nevada where some positive headlines are coming to light. Enter a new focus on outdoor recreation.

In the last eight months, two national magazines have labeled Reno in their “Best Towns” features.

In the April edition of Men’s Health in an article titled “Ski and Climb Without the Crowds”, the Reno image of downtown casinos and their accompanying all-night buffets are debunked, giving way to a more “hipper” way of life. Men’s Health talks to Reno’s proximity to Lake Tahoe and the four season recreational opportunities available. SOUTH TAHOE WOODEN BOAT CLASSIC RETURNS TO TAHOE KEYS

The South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic (STWBC), a vintage boat show for charity, will be held on July 30^th & 31^st at the Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club.

This premier judged boat show features 65 rare and beautiful antique and classic wooden boats. Thunderbird, Lake Tahoe’s most famous boat, will be showcased “Celebrating her 70^th Birthday”. The 55-foot antique mahogany and stainless steel cruiser, now protected by Foundation 36, will celebrate her 70 years on the Lake throughout the summer but this will be the only place that the public will be able to see her up close outside her boat house, and learn about her history on the Lake.

We are pleased that the show supports these deserving South Lake Tahoe community charities City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe, Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society.

Antique boats from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s are featured. There will be five 1960’s drag boats, including Golden Komotion, a fantastic drag boat which dominated the blown gas class.

The Tahoe Maritime Museum booth is offering new members a ride in a beautiful boat from their collection.
The South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic is offering a chance to win a weekend at South Lake Tahoe, a tour of the Thunderbird Lodge and a cruise on the legendary boat Thunderbird.
